Dry sift is a hash making technique. Dry sifting marijuana leads to the trichome heads from the marijuana plant to fall off and be collected separately. The product that is usually sifted is trim and sugar leaf. Dry sift can be pressed and turned into hash oil rosin. Dry sift, also referred to as kief, has proficient rosin yields. Dry sift usually yields 40% – 60% rosin.
Step 1: Take 1 to 2 handful of product (ie. trim, leaves, nugs). Drop the 1-2 handfuls on the top micron mesh screen and lightly roughen the pile across the top. Your technique for spreading the material across the screen will determine how much usable product is returned based on how lightly the material is handled. Breaking up the material will result in more contaminant in the product, which is not good.
Step 2: Remove sifted material and put it into a bin for a second sift, a BHO run or for cannabutter. The plant side product can also be thrown away at this point if you don’t want to work the material anymore.
Step 3: Once you have sifted all of your material, remove the top screen and get a card to collect all of the undisturbed trichome heads. The product at this point can be smoked. I recommend putting it in a tea bag or 25u screen to turn into solventless hash oil. This material is great for making rosin and leads to a cleaner and better smoke.
